Shoo-foo stands for soft & comfortable: soft & comfortable for the consumer – soft and comfortable for the planet.
Shoo-foo’s mission is to contribute to reducing our harmful footprint on the planet. We are committed to providing good quality products for the modern consumers who care for the environment and live a healthy lifestyle.
The Shoo-foo lifestyle was born out of a desire to create change. As the founder of Shoo-Foo, my passion for eco-sustainability led me to pursue a degree in Ecology from the University of Quebec in Montreal. During my time there, I followed my second passion, which was Language Studies, specifically the Chinese language. Soon after becoming fluent in Mandarin, I traveled to China, where I lived and worked for over 10 years.
When I realized that approximately half a pound of pesticides/insecticides/fertilizers were expelled into the environment for every single cotton t-shirt I was buying, I knew it was time to find another solution. After thorough research, I was shocked to discover the hidden facts behind many of my everyday cotton t-shirts. For example:
1: Cotton plantations account for more than 10% of pesticide use, and 25% of insecticide use worldwide.
2: These chemicals are among the most harmful on the planet, many of them are carcinogenic.
3: The clothing industry is one of the most polluting on the planet, heavily contributing to soil contamination, water pollution, deforestation, greenhouse gases etc.
4: The chemicals used in clothing production heavily contaminate the soil and the water where they are grown and find their way into our food and drinking water.
It was in China that my first passion met my second. I discovered the idea of bamboo as a resource for fabric. Ability to speak Chinese and relate to the culture allowed me to establish significant relationships with the members of the bamboo industry. It was only a matter of time before Shoo-foo became the growing business it is today.
