What is bamboo charcoal and how is it used in fabrics?
Bamboo Charcoal being used in fabric is a relatively new concept, but people are catching on to this discovery and it has become a popular and eco friendly choice for linens and towels. Bamboo charcoal is made by heating bamboo fibres at high temperatures of 800-1000 degrees celsius. Once the bamboo has been turned into charcoal it is grinded into a very fine dark powder. Then the charcoal powder is blended with other fibres to create a textile with unique proprieties. In most cases, it is blended with polyester. But at Shoo-Foo, we blend them together with organic bamboo fibres and spin the blend into a bamboo charcoal yarn that we use to create our new line of towels that we are so excited to have available at our online store.
What makes bamboo charcoal different from other fabrics?
We love bamboo, and when it is combined with charcoal from bamboo it produces even more amazing qualities. Here are some of the reasons why our bamboo charcoal bath towels are something to be excited about:
Bamboo charcoal towels are super absorbent
Bamboo fabric has superior absorbency than regular cotton. When coupled with bamboo charcoal, not only the towels absorb moisture, they also adsorb chemicals and toxins from your skin and the air. To adsorb means that the bamboo charcoal attracts negative particles so that they cling to the bamboo charcoal rather than lingering in the air or on your skin.
Antimicrobial and antibacterial functions of bamboo charcoal
Bamboo has natural antibacterial qualities. This means that our organic bamboo towels are resistance to the development of mold and mildew. In addition to being antibacterial (because they are also made from organic bamboo) bamboo charcoal towels are also antimicrobial. Antimicrobial towels kill microorganisms that could be present on your skin (like staph). Our bamboo charcoal towels stay fresh longer and keep you healthy too!
Health benefits from negative ions produced by bamboo charcoal fabric
Bamboo charcoal produces negative ions or negatively charged ions. An abundance of negative ions typically means that the air is fresher and cleaner. For example, there are more negative ions found in the great outdoors than in urban areas. Negative ions occur naturally from evaporating water which could be the reason why you feel so great when you go to the ocean shore or visit a cascading waterfall. When Bamboo charcoal is blended with bamboo fibres, the negative ionic charge of bamboo charcoal attract odours and excess moisture in the atmosphere, thereby leaving you feeling refreshed after each use.
Far Infrared Ray properties of bamboo charcoal
Some types of bamboo charcoal emit far infrared rays and have many health benefits including a better blood circulation. Somewhat like a sauna, the far infrared rays emitted by these types of bamboo charcoal are able to penetrate through your skin, dislodge toxins hiding there and stimulate the water molecules in their path thus promoting a better blood circulation. We don’t know yet if the far infrared ray properties of bamboo charcoal are retain when woven into a fabric. It is only recently that bamboo charcoal have been used in fabrics. Therefore, more experiment need to be done to fully understand its value. You can read more about bamboo charcoal here.
