World Bamboo Day is almost here! September 18 marks the day where the world comes together to celebrate our love of bamboo and its many, many uses. Here at Shoo-Foo, we’re crazy about bamboo because it’s an eco-friendly, sustainable resource in so many different applications. If you’re interested in learning more about how bamboo can impact your life, read on.
Bamboo In Architecture
People have been using bamboo supports for centuries in Asia. It was even used to help scaffold the Great Wall!
How It’s Made shared a video on how bamboo scaffolding was used for a Hong Kong skyscraper. With some skyscrapers reaching over 500 feet, ease of transport is important. Bamboo is more flexible, less expensive, and lighter than other materials traditionally used for scaffolding like aluminum or steel.
It takes four years for the bamboo to grow to the desired height before it’s taken to the construction site. The workers use plastic straps to secure bamboo poles together and steel tubes to reinforce the scaffolding. Bamboo’s strength comes from its hollow nature — unlike other types of wood. The resulting scaffold is strong enough for workers to scale.

Bamboo In Fabric And Textiles
At Shoo-Foo, we believe strongly in using bamboo in our fabrics as a sustainable alternative to other materials. Fabrics made from bamboo are soft, antibacterial, and are made with fewer chemicals and waste than materials such as cotton. Bamboo fibres are woven together to create everything from towels to bed sheets.
Bamboo In Everyday Life
From bicycles to steamers, bamboo can be used everywhere. People have built incredible sculptures using bamboo and some even race on a single piece of bamboo. There are even wireless bamboo speakers that don’t require a power source (see them in action here). With bamboo’s incredible growing capacity (it can grow up to 1 meter in a year!), and minimal environmental impact, it’s a great material to use in almost any application!
Check out the World Bamboo Day website and Facebook group for more information on upcoming events and more great uses for bamboo. We’ve also got a Pinterest board on everything bamboo that highlights other uses for this amazing resource.
