This year, celebrate the holidays with an environmentally friendly live tree in your home. Contrary, to popular myth, buying or cutting down a natural tree will not harm the environment. Greenpeace is one of many organizations that suggest buying a real tree over an artificial one this Christmas. The materials artificial trees are composed of require a significant amount of energy to create. The artificial trees also create damaging by-products that can be harmful to our environment. A natural tree will biodegrade eventually while an artificial tree will end up at a landfill after about six years which is the average life span. Real trees will also create the traditional Christmas ambiance with their smell and feel in your home.
Here’s a list of some considerations when you are looking for Christmas trees this holiday season!
Before setting out to buy your Christmas tree, determine where the local tree farms are rather than driving around and increasing your carbon footprint. Create a family fun activity by bringing the whole family to the tree farm and select a tree together!
When looking for a tree farm ensure that the tree farm uses minimal, if any, pesticides and herbicides.
The holidays are about care and compassion so why not support a local community cause or charity this holiday by purchasing your tree from a lot that donates a portion of their funds!
Cut your own
You can select your tree at a tree farm or get a permit, and choose the perfect tree for your family!
The most eco-friendly tree you can cut down would be underneath the power lines as these are trees that will be removed due to safety reasons at some point. Rather than having them removed by the hydro company, you can use these trees for your holidays. There will be guidelines for your district, and often a permit must be obtained, so be sure to check your local municipal government websites first!
Rent a tree
