How do forests impact your life?
Forests provide resources for humans and wildlife all over the earth. This doesn’t mean we should just take the resources and do nothing to protect and help save forests in order to conserve the resources they provide. Although forests are so vast and immense they still need protecting otherwise they are at risk of being wiped out by modern developments, the never ending demand for lumber and mined resources, all of which are continuously depleting the earth’s forests. All of this affects the forests, which in turn affects the rest of the planet, including you.
Facts about Forests all over the world
According to the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) Forests cover 31% of the total land area on the earth. Given that such a large percentage of the earth is considered to be forest it should not surprise you that throughout the world there are over 300 million people who inhabit the forests and that 1.6 billion people depend on forests for their livelihood. Forests are also home to 80% of the different species and organisms on the earth. As you can see from this data, forests play a major role in the existence of life on earth. In addition to the direct impact they have on their inhabitants, forests play a major role in regulating the climate all over the planet. They provide cleaner, fresher air that makes it possible for all of earth’s inhabitants to be able to breathe. One of the largest forests remaining on earth is actually here in Canada. It is called the Boreal Forest and it needs to be protected from loggers and miners who are moving deeper into the forest for resources.
What can we do to help save forests?
Choosing to use alternative resources is one way that you can participate in preserving natural forests. Recycled wood can be used for furniture and various building materials. Using recycled wood prevents the need to cut down new trees for products. Another way to help save forests is to save paper. There are plenty of ways to save paper especially with all of the advancements in technology there is less of a need for using as much paper as in the past. You can opt out of receiving paper bank statements, since everything is online and bring your own reusable bags to the grocery store to save paper bags. Even with your efforts, in North American culture there is still a lot of paper wasted which still negatively impacts the forests, but every little bit will help save forests that much more!
If you want to help save forests use alternative resources like bamboo
Bamboo is a wonderful alternative to trees that can be used instead of wood for furniture, bamboo flooring and even small items like kitchen bowls, cutting boards and utensils. Even the little things can help make a difference when it comes being able to help save forests on our planet. Bamboo is not limited to being used for small things; it can also be used as part of the structural components for homes restaurants and larger buildings. The greenbuild.org website lists possible uses for bamboo for sustainable building projects. Bamboo is not only a more eco friendly option; it is also a more cost effective option as well. Because it is such a fast growing plant this makes it a more affordable resource than wood from trees.
